Touch Me

t'irla ~The BookSlayer~'s review Apr 23, 13  ·

Rock Stars and older women! Why do guitar players make good lovers, Lust turns to more....

Description:

Book 4 in the One Night with Sole Regret serial series

He went there looking for a sure bet…
Sole Regret’s bassist, Owen Mitchell, is convinced that romance is for chumps. He’s only looking for a good time, and when he spots an attractive, older woman emitting men-suck vibes at a brand new sex club, he’s sure he’s found it.

She went there hoping to get over her ex-husband…
Successful business woman, Caitlyn Hanson, is still infuriated and hurt over her ex-husband’s affair with a much younger woman. She’s only looking to scrub his claim from her body by offering it to the first attractive man who shows her interest, and the young, hot stud, who just sat down at her table, will do quite nicely.

They never meant to get personal…
Caitlyn knows she’s not supposed to get attached to Owen just because he gives her body pleasure unlike any she’s ever known, but it’s her first one-night-stand and she can’t seem to keep her heart out of the equation. For once, Owen finds himself in the same conundrum. He likes Caitlyn too much to keep his heart at a safe distance, but will a mistake from Owen’s past drive her away forever?

My Thoughts:

In this 4th episode in our One of with Sole Regret Series..and definitely not one to be missed. Now iuf you have read any of my reviews for shorter stories or novellas you know that I usually rate them a bit lower than usual because I don't feel you can do everything that needs to be done to make a "great" story in those few pages. With Touch me things are a bit different. We have already met most of the characters and have had background of the Band, the characters and plot line. So the only new character is the female protagonist. As usual I love OC's males better than I like her female characters but I have to honest I did like Caitlyn I think she handled the age difference pretty good..very little angst about it. It was nice to see how both she and Owen grew as they got to know each other. The first sex scene in the book was one of the hottest I have read in a while and one that was very different from any other sexy/steamy scenes. I also enjoyed getting to know Kellen better and can't wait for his book. Over all great plot wonderful multi diamensional characters ..and an easy read. All these things have me biting at the bit for the next book. All the dangling threads are driving me nuts!!!!

4 fuzzy Bears for Touch Me ...book for in the Sole Regret series...and I highly recommend it but you need to read the series from book 1 to get the entire feel.

Having Cake

Read from April 20 to 21, 2013

Wow!! Why didn't my best friend set this up for me when I was single...Hawt, Steamy, yet sweet!

Description:

On her birthday, Meg is offered the chance to fulfill one of her ultimate fantasies. Her friends Patrick and Noah have concocted a plan to achieve her voyeur fantasy. But can one wild night lead to love for her and the guy she’s wanted for months? Or has having her cake and eating it too ruined her chances?

*note: I do not give short stories a 5 star rating as I don't think you can really create an indept story, background on Characters and build a world in those few pages.

My Thoughts,

This menage M/F/M was entertaining and very sweet. I enjoyed Patrick totally! and I thought his interaction with Meg was adorable. For some reason I connected more with him than with the other characters. Meg was interesting and I think with more pages that she would have been an outstanding character. The relationship between the two by the end was believable and sweet. Noah I didn't really feel at all. I understand he was Meg's bestie but I just didn't' feel him. That all being said I sure wish I had a best who would do this me!!!

3 Bears for this sweet yet steamy short story. I loved how the story flowed so I will definitely be looking for more books by this author.

Soul Mates

Read from April 14 to 15, 2013

What do time travel, highlander, billionaire, and witches all have in common-Soul Mates of course.

Description:

Pulled Back Through Time, Shandelle Is Caught Between An Enduring Love And A Wizard’s Magic

In the beginning of time, one soul splits into two. Lifetime after lifetime, the two souls are reborn and seek to reunite. Like a beacon of light from heaven above, their light shines for each other. Without the other, there is only darkness. A wonderful blessing that can only come from a deeply-bonded love, the sharing of one soul can also be a black curse if something disrupts the moment of their coming together.

Ireland 1323... Donovan, chieftain of the Clan O'Brien, has unsuccessfully searched his entire adult life, to the detriment of his clan and all those around him, for that elusive possession that will bring his soul peace. He doesn't know what it is, but he will give up everything to find it. One day, he is summoned by the Wizard and told the secret of his obsession—his soul mate. She is no longer living in his time, but there is a way to bring her back to him.

Phoenix 2013... Shandelle and Ian are embarking on their new life together. She is everything Ian ever wanted but never realized he needed before he met her. Shandelle is a generous soul who lives to make Ian and everyone around her happy. Unfortunately for them both, evil is stalking them. The blood bond duty of a close friend brings betrayal and evil into their lives. How were they to know that the death of a six-year-old girl in the early fourteenth century could have such grave consequences on their lives today?

*****Given the book by the author in exchange for an honest review******

My Thoughts:

I have to start off by saying Time Travel is normally not my thing however when it involves sexy highlanders I tend to make exceptions:) I am really torn regarding this book, I loved 75% of it especially the Ian/Shadelle story line. I also enjoyed the beginning of Donovan's story when Shannon was young and she met Aengus. I love Aengus's character and would love to read more about him. I enjoyed Shandelle's friendship with her girls and the interaction between them. Sandy Wolters did a fine job creating characters which the reader could relate. Where she lost me was mostly with Donovan...hated him!! I wasn't sure if he was a bad guy or a good guy who lost his way or what. He betrayed his people by being so selfish he couldn't get past himself. He had no consideration for anyone's feelings but his own..he actually reminded me of a petulant 4 year old. I also couldn't figure out the reason for a couple of the characters as they didn't add anything to the story. Taylor being one and Niall being the other. But perhaps if this novel turns into a series light will be shed on SW's reasons.

There are 2 things that I know some of my fellow reviewers had a hard time with because they stretched their limits of acceptable. I didn't really have an issue with either of these things. However, I was a bit put out when the intimacy continued over a 2 month span. Connected to this I couldn't figure out why Ian was not more upset about it.

So how does one rate a book with a 75/25 split? I have been mulling this over for a few days. I liked the interaction between characters, I liked part one of the book, I liked the original protagonists. I didn't like the "villian" and there were a few other quirks I mentioned above but over all I think it was a good story and I think people who enjoy time travel novels and sexy highlanders and billionaires will really enjoy it.

Therefore I rate this a 3.5 bears read and a recommendation to people who love time travel books to pick this up. Sandy Wolters is an up and coming author with a big future ahead of her.

Labels, Serials and Soapboxes

They are everywhere...labels...yup how do you attract buyers?? Labels..New and improved, New Recipe, New Lower price...and so many more.  Then you have labels *on* labels just to confuse the issue.  But books I think is the only place you will find labels that will take another product and use it to sell itself.

Now I have been complaining for years about stickers on my purchases.  Getting them off the item I have bought is just a pain in the a$$.  I have had to actually go out and buy "Goo Gone" to get the sticky stuff off..just to find out that peanut butter works much better.  But I never thought I would have to worry about

anything other than price tags on books.  Whoever had the idea that it was ok to put price stickers on the cover of book should be shot.  I like to keep my hardbacks and paperbacks pristine and trying to take a price tag off drives me crazy.  Now, we have to deal with this new *larger* label, I'm sure you all have seen it..hell they even have it on the cover of ebooks.  "If you like 'Fifty Shades of Grey' you will like this book." it drives me crazy!  That label sticks to the cover of the book and is almost impossible to get off without ruining the the cover.  Now I might sound a little OCD to you but when I buy something I expect it to be in perfect condition.  I have even sent books back to Amazon where the edges have been bent a bit or scraped with instructions as to how books should be shipped.  I have always gotten a perfect book back.  Yes, I admit it, I am a booksellers nightmare when it comes to this type of thing.

Now to rub salt into this wound, I have taken note of the books they are putting these labels on..now lets remember they are comparing these books to the ever popular Fifty Shades of Grey..A coming of age story that features a damaged male protagonist, an innocent female protagonist and some kinky BDSM inspired graphic sex.  Yes, yes..there is more to the story than this..but I"m not one for spoiling a book for anyone.  I digress, the books I am speaking of are *nothing* like FSoG.  What I am seeing out there is if there is any type of graphic sex..mention of sex, mention of kink, has a billionaire protagonist or a innocent college age girl then it is being labeled and compared to FSoG.  Nothing like the publishers trying to cash in on E.L James's success.  I appreciate that publishers are in the business to make money..after all we all need to pay the bills but I would hope that there would be some ethics involved.  Is it ethical to lead the book buyers astray by comparing books that are nothing like FSoG and labeling them?

Ethics and Publishing...now this brings up another issue that has become popular with publishers in the last little while mostly in the ebook medium.  Serials ..taking a book and releasing it in 10 separate novelletes usually under 60 pages.  Each of the 'parts' of the serial costs the buying public usually from 2.99 to 3.99..now lets do our math ..10 'parts at 2.99 is....29.99 when was the last time any of us have paid 30.00 for a contemporary romance?? Heck, we were complaining over the $15.99 that Lover at Last was selling for in ebook form.  If these "serials" are not a price gouge I don't know it is.  I personally find myself avoiding the works of authors who are participating in this outrageous business practice.  I am not blaming the authors I understand some of them are kowtowing to the publishers demands however I feel they are doing their readers a huge disservice.  I can hear some of our authors now getting all defensive stating they need to make money too.  I agree they do..working hard, marketing and building a name..then they can charge 15.99 for a ebook.  However, I question the ethics of wanting to charge their readers almost 30.00 for what in the end is one complete book.  jus sayin!

So with all this ranting I guess I need go one step further and say...no.   I will *not* buy a book with a label comparing it to another book, I will *not* spend any of my hard earned money on a serial series. I encourage other readers to do the same ..at some point we need to step up and tell the publishers of these books that we the consumers are not stupid and we resent misrepresentation and price gouging.

*steps off her soapbox to hand out buttons reading "Reader are not as dumb as publishers think"*

Oliver's Hunger

t'irla ~The BookSlayer~'s review
Read from April 05 to 06, 2013

A little bit for everyone Suspense, romance, steam, vampires-Good read for a cold night.

Description:

Newly turned vampire and Scanguards bodyguard Oliver has trouble controlling his thirst for blood. Every night is a struggle against temptation, but when Asian beauty Ursula literally falls into his arms, he fears he will lose the battle over his inner demons and succumb to bloodlust.

Enslaved by vampires for her special blood, Ursula has just escaped her captors. She’s rescued by a handsome stranger, only to realize that he’s a vampire. He claims he wants to help her, but can she trust a vampire who’s not only lusting after her body, but also her blood?

Her promise to rescue her fellow blood whores compels her to join forces with Oliver and his colleagues at Scanguards. Will her choice lead to her salvation or her downfall?

My Thoughts:

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed in this book. I loved Oliver's character through out the series and really looked forward to reading his story and find out who his mate was going to be. I thought Ursula would be a good mate for him but I had a really hard time warming up and connecting with her. The more I read of her background the less I found her believable. Her parents were diplomats from China which means at most she was 1st generation American. I just didn't see the cultural differences that would be glaring obvious in a 1st gen. I understood her hesitation to trust but I just couldn't *feel* it. I also was disappointed in how the rest of the Scanguards treated Oliver it just didn't seem in character, well except for Zane and he was a major a$$hole in this novel which again put me off cause I thought he would mellow out a bit since his story. But Maya etc woah over the top. My last issue was with Blake and Oliver, I get that there is a sibling rivalry there but with Oliver's age and the fact he had been on his own for a long time again I had a believablity issue.

Putting this all aside I did enjoy the story and there were many parts of the book I did like so for me this is a 3 Bear read and I can't wait for the next book. I know it will be better.

Walking Disaster

Read from April 02 to 03, 2013

Travis, Travis, how do I love thee...even more now that I have read Walking Disaster one of my favorite love stories told through Travis's POV...LOVED IT!!!!

Description:

Travis Maddox learned two things from his mother before she died: Love hard. Fight harder.

In Walking Disaster, the life of Travis is full of fast women, underground gambling, and violence. But just when he thinks he is invincible, Abby Abernathy brings him to his knees.

Every story has two sides. In Beautiful Disaster, Abby had her say. Now it’s time to see the story through Travis’s eyes.

My Thoughts:

Jamie McGuire is a brave woman. This was a gamble and happily one that paid off. After reading Beautiful Disaster everyone wanted to hear the story from Travis's side. As one of my very favorite books this could have gone very very badly but Jamie pulled it off. Although a bit disjointed this absolutely let us feel Travis..his pain, his confusion, his hurt...I was in tears for the guy. My heart actually ached and I wanted to share his bottle of JB with him. JM has such a talent for creating characters that are so fully diamensional that you can't help but feel you are in their skin or at least be their confidant. I won't comment on the plot or story line because I said it all in Beautiful Disaster other than I have to say the read was worth it for the epilogue alone.

I hope Jamie gives us more of the Maddox family I would love to read about Thomas and his FBI work and hear Trenton and Cami's story. I will be attending a Question/Answer chat with her this month so it is a question I am dying to ask. Regardless of what she writes I know it will be wonderful and hope the wait is short. Well done Jamie McGuire..now I have to go read BD and WD side by side..which I think will be wonderful!!!

4.5 stars for this fantastic companion book to Beautiful Disaster. I must mention the beautiful cover as well...loved it.A short warning you do need to read BD prior to this book to understand all the nuances and plot development.
