I loved Rosanna Leo's tale of Calan a Scottish Selkie.I admit it took me a while to get my head around a sexy wereseal? . I mean the .pups are cute and all, but can seals be alpha male enough for us the shifter loving readers? Hrrms? My bestie Bookie was putting on the pressure to read Selkie so once again I gave into peer pressure. Yes, I'm afraid of her, she has a HUGE bat and isn't afraid to use it. (if curious check out Gotta have Paranormal Romances with a Kick her bat has a high profile there). I read it and yes, Calan was every inch a alpha male shifter AND to top it off he has a scottish burrrrrrrr. *sigh* These thoughts lead me to thinking about other "outta the norm" animals that could be a shifter or were. I wondered if a talented author such as Rosanna Leo could make them into sexy alpha male heroes. So being that I had some time on my hands I made a list of animals that I have a hard time thinking of as alpha or sexy.
Hedgehog
Squirrel
Parakeet
Chipmunk
Hamster
I thought of a few others but the dynamic Laurell K Hamilton made Wererats sexy, snake shifters bad guys and I know we will be introduced to even more types of shifters as Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series keeps it's momentum. Personally? ..I LOVE Bear shifters, I have always been a bear girl, soft cuddly, large, with claws and teeth to protect you. They are thoughtful and mild mannered. Well in my mind they were., I found Shelly Laurenston's Bear shifters and I was gone. I wanted one...needed one, however there are very few bear shifter books unless you read some Native American stories and there the Bear is not always the good guy. MY bears are always the good guy. So here I am in December and find Kerrelyn Sparks releases her newest book Wild About You in which her protagonist is the werebear Howard. *bounce* Yes I am excited. Then so put me more into a dither I had a conversation with Rosanna Leo and found she is currently writing about a Bear Shifter, I fell to my knees at her feet and begged her to allow me to beta read for her, then encouraged her to call her heroine t'irla, she wisely dodged the request. So it looks like my winter 2012 and into 2013 should be the year of the bear. *scratches head* I wonder if anyone else frets over their were/shifter preference or if I just need to get out more.
So happy you're excited about my bears!! I hope to be done with them soon. As for the different kinds of shifters, I'm not sure I could work with the hedgehog. He isn't appealing to me on a sexual level, cute as he is. One weird one I've considered is snakes...what do you think of that?
ReplyDeleteYikes!! snakes..noooooooo...Dragon yes....snake no....*shiver* Iguana??? *LOL*
Deletehow about a Zebra havent heard of 1 of them, or a dinosaur, stick to your hero shifters they are more fun than the outside world
ReplyDeleteOoh a dino! Not sure Julie, but we can give it some though! LOL Thanks for visiting.
DeleteI read Shelly Laurenston's bears just last week! I love Bo *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI read a cute Bunny shifter book by Eve Langlais, but the bunny was the heroine. What about horse shifters? I've never read about them before.
Love Shelly too Nae one of my fav's....for a horse shifter try Riley Jensen by your fellow Aussie Keri Arthur ...she is a great writer and the series is a good one. Of course I have all her books *wink* I think you would like it.
DeleteBunny shifter eh?? gotta look for that one:)
it took all of 2 minutes for me to fall in love with calan, seal or no seal, that man is smexy! can't wait for rosanna to bring his brothers into the mix ;) and woot woot! so excited to hear about rosanna writing a bear shifter story *squee/spaz* my first ever shifters series was a wolf shifter, so they are very near and dear to my heart. but i have also quite enjoyed some dragon shifters *whew*...yeah, quite enjoyed those. lol. great review!
ReplyDeleteLisa Hendrix has shifters too in a series called Immortal Brotherhood. An eagle, a lion, a bull, and i think the 4th book is about a horse. She isn't saying when the 4th is coming out though. She said something about having issues with it. Hope its soon though. I really like the Viking mythology she's weaved into it.
